AJHS - 15

Part - 15

Khushi POV

The Crown of Palaces looked magnificent, glistening brightly under the afternoon sunlight. I felt like a Queen watching the white marble Mughal architecture known as the Taj Mahal. My eyes were stuck taking in the beauty of this symbol of Love.

Only when warm fingers entwined with mine, did I realize how and what led me to witness such a beautiful sight. I whirled around to face the one person because of whom I found the perfect opportunity to visit one of the seven wonders of this world. Clad in a white dress shirt and figure-hugging faded jeans he was dressed to kill. While I stood next to him wrapped up in six yards of orange. A gift by Arnav Singh Raizada, my lover and date.

You look so enchanting in this creation of mine.

Did you design this piece? For me?

He nodded and dragged me from the balcony, back to the restaurant where our meal was waiting for us. I immediately sighed missing the view. There were no other guests apart from us. Only the staff could be seen hovering around us. If your boyfriend is ASR then of course booking the entire restaurant is not a big thing. Not at all.

Watching the floral decorations around us I could not help but recall how I landed up in the city of Agra. A few days ago after Arnavji's overnight stay at Laxmi Nagar, he had asked me out for a date. Our first date. And the idea thrilled me. He kept teasing me about it over the messages that we exchanged. Then last evening a package awaited me on my work desk.

The rest of the language teachers peeked from their respective cubicles to see my flustered face as I read the racy love note from Mr Raizada. Unwrapping the gift my eyes gleamed as a bright orange saree with zardozi work greeted me. The ladies behind me started whispering amongst themselves. They had seen me with Arnavji a couple of times. They knew I was dating the sponsor of this language school. Grinning at my beloved choice I quickly thanked him with a text. I received a reply instantly.

Wear this for our lunch date tomorrow.

Feeling giddy I could not sleep properly and chose to start my day a little early. By the time everyone came to the breakfast table I was dressed up in the orange saree looking no less than a fairy. Jeeji and Buaji both were very surprised by my new look. But they were satisfied when I told them about a special pooja at my office. Thankfully they did not ask any further questions after that. Picking up my steaming cup of tea I left the breakfast table and retreated to my bedroom. I could see the sun peeking inside my window, the beams created a natural spotlight for the idol of Devi Maiyya placed on my table. I took the artistic view as a blessing of God. A sign that Arnavji and I were meant to be. I sipped the beverage in between my musings. Suddenly my phone on the nightstand vibrated twice. I picked up the device cheerfully. Arnavji wanted me to come out on the main street after twenty minutes. Grinning at his words I replied in agreement. I was about to hit the send button when something made me stop. Knowing that Arnavji won't deny my request I asked him to bring a special box along for this date of ours. Feeling satisfied I finally tapped on the send button. The thumbs up and kiss emojis that I instantly received made me turn a dark shade of red.

After that what happened felt like dream. A ten minutes car ride to the tallest building which consisted of a helipad. A huge black helicopter with the logo of AR on its tail. And then I was flying in the air like a fairy in a fairyland. Throughout the ride, Arnav Singh Raizada kept a tight hold on my hand. Yup, the same man who once had loosened his grip making me fall dramatically. I wanted someone to pinch me. However, my eyes reached my hairline and my jaw dropped as our ride came to an end. The enigmatic vision of the Taj Mahal left me shell shocked.

Khushi...KHUSHI...Hello??

Huh?

Arnavji's loud and husky voice brought me back from my thoughts. I must have appeared to be a lunatic person to him. His brown eyes locked me in an intense spell. I could feel his thumb caressing the back of my hand. His actions made me shiver in response. After what seemed to like hours but were mere minutes Arnavji enquired about the box. He strategically placed it on the table next to our hands.

Tumne mujhse iss box ko lane ko kyun kaha Khushi?
(Why did you ask me to get this box Khushi?)

Woh humein aapse issi ke baare mein poochan tha.
(I wanted to ask you a few questions that are related to this box).

I backtracked my hand from his hold and used both of my hands to open the delicate box which was a key to Arnavjis past. Our past. The items were still the same. A scrap of dupatta. Three pearls. A silver key. It felt nostalgic. We have come afar. The fragments of our love and hate relationship were lying inside the box as if they were the most prized possession of Arnav Singh Raizada. Caressing the pearls with my fingers I tried to avoid the flashes of our first meeting and verbalized my doubts.

You still don't remember much about our first meeting right?

He glanced at the pearls with a lost look in his eyes. I knew I hit a nerve but some things needed to be discussed. Something important enough to move forward in our relationship. My fragile heart needed a little reassurance. Arnavji lifted his eyes and answered with a hint of frustration in his tone.

I am blank. I don't remember a thing about how we met. But why did you...?

Arnavji I know you feel annoyed because you don't recall our past. I just feel that when one day everything will come back to you...the ASR in you might force you to push me away.

As soon as I finished my sentence he stood up from his chair and pulled me up with him. Hugging my petite frame, he patted my back, making me sigh in relief. Thank god he is not mad. My healing heart wanted this. This feeling of comfort that only Arnavji could provide. I wrapped my arms around his form enjoying our proximity.

The egoistic side of me was unable to handle the sudden burst of feelings that flooded inside me after you came into my life. But when the ASR within me will return then he won't have any issues because I have already done the hard work for him. I have your affections. Right?

Chuckling at his explanation I felt the cloud of despair disappear. His words made my fears vanish altogether. Now I knew that finally, our relationship could move ahead. Without any obstacles. We can deal with the rest of the things. My family. His family. Our class differences. These are easy to tackle. My stomach growled loudly making Arnavji loosen his hold on me. With a grin, he gestured for me to finish our meal.

An hour later we were walking in the nearby garden. He asked me more about the items in the box. Slowly and gradually I told him all about our meetings. Coiled in hatred and fear, the pearls held a significant chunk of our past. The silver key that clued me in about our perspective towards life. And the scrap of dupatta that witnessed yet another argument after I landed my first job in AR Designs. I guffawed at the last one.

Arnav POV

I could not understand how our moments could be so intense yet painful. I was expecting that the box would reveal something beautiful. Yet Khushi Kumari Gupta's explanation felt so bizarre.
My inappropriate and disrespectful actions must have scared this woman. Her words broke something inside me. Cornering a lady and tearing the pearls of her blouse? Forcing the same woman to leave her city just to shatter her belief in God? Again tearing off a piece of her stole just to satisfy my ego? I was drowning in my guilt.

However, I felt an immense hatred for ASR. My dark and controlling side had pushed away from such a beautiful soul simply to satisfy his powerful self. I shook my head in disbelief. And now I felt thankful because my amnesia felt like a blessing in disguise. My heart finally found a way out to reach the love of my life. Now my absent memories did not make me angry. Rather I bathed in self-loathing after every explanation about my past. I sat on the nearby bench trying to process every information about my beastly side.

A few minutes later I sensed Khushi on the other side of the bench. She casually placed her hand above mine and continued to stare ahead. The Taj Mahal was still visible to us from an adjacent angle.

Khushi I understand your previous fears completely. But I can only promise to repent for every sin that I have committed against you. Even if my memories come back I won't let you walk out of my life.

We sat for a little while talking about our families. Khushi wanted her Buaji to like the new me. I too agreed with her. My family already loves Khushi so it is just the Guptas whose approval I need. Finally after some time, begrudgingly we returned to the helipad. Our date had come to an end but I felt much better after spending some quality time with my girlfriend.

Thankfully when I returned to Shantivan nobody bothered me. I only came down to have dinner with the family. My eyes met the twinkling ones of Dhruv Singh Raizada. He knew I was out on a date with his teacher. I simply winked in his direction and continued to eat my meal.

After retiring to my room I was trying to work on some accounts resting on the recliner when my worried brother charged inside my bedroom. I raised an eyebrow at his sudden presence but he scooted towards me and sat on the edge of the bed with an expression of defeat.

What is wrong Akaash?

Wrong? What is wrong? Bhai you don't know how foolish I have been.

Concerned by the seriousness of the situation I tried to calm him down but he was not in the mood to hear me out. He stood up and began to pace back and forth to annoy me. Rolling my eyes I stood up and made him stop.

Stop pacing and start talking.

Bhai I told Mom and Nani about Payal.

Oh.

I leaned on the poolside door listening to my brother's detailed explanation. Siddharth Shukla provoked Akaash to take this drastic step. And now he was sure that by tomorrow Raizada family would visit the Guptas with a proposal for Payal. Well does he not wish to get married? Then what's with the panicky attitude.

So you don't wish to get married?

No! No that's not...Bhai I love Payal and wish to marry her. But Payal might not approve of this. Tomorrow our family will drop the marriage bomb on her. Payal is clueless about my spectacularly foolish act. We just became a couple two days ago...

Now I understood his folly. Doing irrational things was easy. Finding explanations for the same was not just difficult but downright impossible. Moving forward to where he stood I patted his shoulders in sympathy. His plight made me recall the days when I shared a rocky relationship with Khushi Kumari Gupta. My vulnerable self needed her to stay by my side. While my confused mind could do nothing to satisfy my fragile heart.

It's fine Akaash I get it. I am an expert when it comes to feelings.
You know what I think you should call Payal right now and admit your mistake. Be honest. That's what our partner desires from us the most.

Pushing back his glasses my brother gave me a blank look as if I were speaking Latin. Woahhh. Am I that unpredictable these days? Or has ASR done a number on everyone? Weird. Cupping his shoulders I shook him a little, successfully bringing him back from his fantasy land. A few minutes later he left my room determined to confess everything to his girl. Hopefully, Payal will appreciate his honest approach.

After freshening up I called it a night and crawled on my bed to find a comfortable position. As I lay down, with a blanket around me, my mind began to imagine the different scenarios if Payal and Akaash would get married soon.

Amidst the several rituals between the two families, I could get the opportunity to spend more and more time with the bride's sister.
Also, my family would appreciate my involvement in the upcoming wedding. I could kill two birds with one stone. Smirking to myself I shut my eyes and let my imagination run wild.

Khushi POV

The next morning I woke up to an empty bed. It was Sunday so Jeeji's absence felt a little weird to me. Taking a quick shower I started my day and walked into the kitchen. I found my sister sipping her tea next to the counter with a scowl on her otherwise pretty face. Strange she was not in a bad mood last night? Before I could enquire about the sulky looks she stopped me.

Buaji has gone to the temple. It is just the two of us. Your breakfast is in the microwave.

Rolling my eyes at her childishness I picked up my breakfast and strolled towards the dining table. The best way to deal with Jeeji when she is in a mood is to let her be. When no one pushes her, my sister automatically starts talking. I was halfway through my meal when Jeeji placed a cup of tea on the table and sat on the adjacent chair. Giving her time to frame her thoughts I sipped the tea and continued with my breakfast. With a sigh, she finally revealed the cause of her tension.

Akaash told his family that he is in love with me. And now any day the Raizadas will land here to fix a date for our marriage.

I coughed up my beverage listening to the unexpected news. I knew Jeeji and Akaashji had a thing, but marriage? Wow. This is so strange? But then marriage is an institution that one enters into someday. Right? Then why is she so troubled by the idea? The frown on her face is not of approval I suppose. Suddenly realization dawned upon me. She is still trying to accept the idea of her and Akaashji being a couple. Of course, she will feel uncomfortable and trapped by the notion.

Taking a deep breath I continued to stare at the exasperation on her face. I knew what I had to do. Jeeju needs someone to assure her that all will be well. Plastering a smile on my face, I put my hand over hers on the dining table.

Calm down Jeeji. Akaashji informed you about his mistake. You have such a flawless relationship. He is so open and honest with you. Right?

Reluctantly Jeeji nodded as my words made sense to her. Though it did not diminish the anger in her otherwise calm eyes. Shaking my head at her expressions I continued my speech.

Even if Raizadas show up here with a proposal then you simply negotiate. Ask for more time. Maybe a few months. And we all are here to support you.

After another thirty minutes of talking, my sister passed me a smile. Thank you Devi Maiyya. She left the table but my mind was still consumed by the thought of her marriage. Her wedding rituals would mean a lot of meetings with the Raizadas. As in Arnavji and I would get chances to sneak around the family and spend more time with one another. My musings were put to a halt with the chimes of my phone.

Come to my office at lunchtime. Kuch baat krni hai.
(I need to speak with you).

I could feel him whispering the same words in my ears. Even in his absence, Mr Arnav Singh Raizada knows how to leave an impression. Flustered by his orders I tried to change the subject. But he was in a mood of his own. Flirt.

Aisi kya baat krni hai aapko?
(What is it that you need to talk about?)

Bas karni hai. Aur mujhe meri Khushi se baat krne se koi nai rok sakta. Tum bhi nai.
(I just do. And no one can stop me from talking to my Khushi. Not even you).

Khushi? Tum itni laal kyun horhi ho? Garmi lgrhi hai kya?
(Why are you turning so red? Are you feeling hot?)

Buaji's sudden entrance made me drop my phone in my lap. Blood rushed in my face listening to her comment. What should I tell her? Hello, Buaji I am blushing because Arnavji is in a flirty mood. You see he is my boyfriend. Embarrassed at being caught I tried to divert Buaji's attention.

Nai. Hum theek hain. Aap kaha gai thi itni subah?
No. I am alright. Where have you been from morning?)

Thankfully Madhumati Mishra did not notice my nervousness and shared the details of the latest gossip she received by word of mouth. Sighing in relief I quickly texted Arnavji that I would visit his office around lunch.

One day this man will be the cause of my death. A heart attack by the intense ASR. Cruel fella. Apne lafzon se aur aankhon se hi katil krdenge humara. Knowing that he will be waiting for me I got dressed and left for work. I had a half-day at work and Arnavji took complete advantage of this knowledge.
(He is a killer who knows how to use his words and eyes as weapons to destroy me).

Shyam POV

It is decided then my next target will be Khushi Kumari Gupta. Seems like ASR is his puppet. He adores that woman. And I will use this information wisely.

Laughing out loud in front of my men I sat on the plush recliner and made a drink for myself. This time I won't spare ASR. He will be punished for taking away my fathers precious land, Sheesh Mahal.

Luck saved him from the accident and the gunshot. But the death of the girl he loves will kill him from inside. Arnav Singh Raizada will die a slow death. He will feel this raw pain and emptiness in his heart. I know what happens when you lose the one who is your everything. He will be left broken and alone.

Admiring the photograph of ASR and Khushi kept on the coffee table I strategically placed a cross on the face of my enemy. Arnav Arvind Mallik. Haha. Enjoy the good times till they last buddy.

AJHS - 14

Part - 14

Arnav POV

Fine. But if this does not works then don't blame me for being aggressive...

Pacing at Khushi's porch I tried to curb the sharp feeling of hatred for Siddharth Shukla, that stabbed my heart. Dhruv was making every effort to ease my mind. However, just the thought of another man staying in my girl's house for the night made my blood boil. Amid my musings I sensed Dhruvs suggestions blaring in my ears.

Listen to me. If Buaji has a soft corner for Akaash Chachu then take advantage of the fact. He can easily convince Buaji to let you guys stay the night as well. Also, this weather is not good for driving. So yes my idea will work.

With a quick goodbye, I hung up on D and returned to the living room, where everyone sat, enjoying Khushi's special ginger tea. She stood behind Buaji glancing at me from the corner of her eye. I could see the anger embedded in her magnificent face. Unfortunately, Shukla chose the same moment to break our romantic spell.

This tea is something Buaji. The spices make it extra special.

Everyone smiled at his compliment but my fear of losing Khushi skyrocketed. Excusing myself I dragged Akaash to one side and shared Dhruv's idea with him. Nodding with a stupid lovesick look on his face, my brother agreed and twirled around to work his magic on Buaji.

Ten minutes later, all of us were pushing the sofa set to different corners of the house. Buaji gave us pillows and mattresses while the girls went inside to arrange blankets for the three of us. Yup. Just because I cannot eject him from Khushi's house does not mean I will allow him the privilege to stay near my girlfriend. Buaji avoided me like plague but for now, my focus was on Shukla.

The rain started to pick up. The storm continued to rage outside, resembling my mood. Like a flash of lightning spider-webbed across the sky, the rain got heavier.   The deafening sound made me conjure up a scenario that was different from reality. Where Buaji coaxed Khushi to get married to Shukla. And suddenly I felt the encompassing desire to assert my importance.

Khushi POV

After the dinner fiasco, I did continued to ignore Arnav Singh Raizada. But the infuriating man had to stay the night just like Sid. His jealousy induced behaviour was getting on my nerves. If he keeps this up then I would never get the opportunity to convince Buaji that Arnavji is a changed man. As it is he left a great impression on her before his accident.

After making sure that the sleeping arrangements were done Buaji asked us to retire to our rooms. The entire evening had drained me. So I chose to agree with her but my empty water bottle forced me to go back to the kitchen. And like a mountain lion ready to pounce on his prey Arnav Singh Raizada stood before me as I filled up my bottle. With wide eyes, I wondered. How? How does he do that? I tiptoed to the kitchen and did not make any noise then how come..? As if he read my mind, the smirking Raizada pointed his index finger towards my feet. Hey, Devi Maiyya my anklets. They are a dead giveaway.

We need to talk.

No, we don't.

With a dismissive wave of my hand, I picked up my bottle and tried to leave the kitchen quietly keeping in mind that there were other people in the house tonight. However, Arnavji had other plans. He held out his arm halting my movements.

Would you have liked it if Lavanya was still living at my house as a friend?

That's irrelevant. This situation is very different from...

His mind-boggling question made me stagger. I looked away unable to hold his gaze. Even the hypothetical situation hurt my soul. Something pierced my heart when he mentioned another woman living in his house. It reminded me of the past, back when Lavanyaji lived with him in Shantivan. Lost in my thoughts I did not realize when he had successfully cornered me against the kitchen counter. The sudden proximity left me speechless. He raised his hand only to curl a fringe of my hair behind my ear. The gesture made me blush.

It hurts right. Now try to relate with my feelings honey. And you are too naive to understand that Sids stupid tactics. I know I am a man.

Placing my palm on his shoulder I tried to control my shallow breaths. Arnav Singh Raizada is surely possessed with some dazzling powers. He knows how to prey on innocent girls. When he rubbed his nose on my warm cheek I sighed breathlessly.

I...I just wanted...to have a friend. Why cannot girls have a good friend that is a man and is not interested in her?

Feelings hands on my midriff I gasped at the sensation that warmed my insides. Arnavji was playing the game of seduction with me. And I could do nothing but fall for his charms. I pushed him away and tried to normalize my breaths. But he had other ideas. Placing his thumb on my collarbone he sensually rubbed the drop of sweat that was pouring down from my neck. He arrested my eyes with his own and spoke huskily.

Girls can have friends there is no doubt about it. But beautiful goddesses like Khushi Kumari Gupta place an enchanting spell on them leaving them helpless.

A loud thud made me come out of my fantasy world. I swirled around to see Sid staring at the two of us with a scowl. The moonlight from the window fell on his face. I glanced to the side only to see Arnavji smirking in his direction as if whatever happened between us was deliberately done for Sid to watch. Thankfully Arnavji pulled back his thumb. I sighed in relief. Before I could verbalize an explanation Arnav Singh Raizada coiled his arm around me and pulled me to his torso. A shiver ran down my spine, in reciprocation of his overwhelming touch.

Hey Siddharth. Khushi tumne apne friend ko humare relationship ke baare mein nai bataya? See, he looks so upset.
(Khushi you did not inform Sid about our relationship?)

Is it true Khushi. Are you two together?

When his flat voice reverberated in the semi-dark kitchen I could not help but feel obligated to answer. He should know that I am not single anymore. He should know that Arnavji and I are together now. And if my man's suspicions are correct then I should be very honest with Siddharth Shukla. Arnavjis previous words about Sid's tactics echoed in my mind. Coming out of my thoughts I chose to be very clear about my relationship status.

Yes. We are dating each other.

Then why did you go to the movies with me Khushi? I thought you liked me? And why did you say yes to today's dinner? I thought we had something special going on...

Siddharth's sudden revelation about our meetings made me gasp. Understanding dawned upon me. Arnavjis earlier claims of Sid's intentions felt like a slap on my face.  How could he assume that I was interested in him in that way? Why would he...? Before I could make my point, Arnavji pushed me behind him as if this move could hide me from the view. His posture became rigid. I could see him fisting his hands. He opened his mouth to utter words, which sounded as cold as ice.

Don't you dare blame my girl, Shukla. She might be naive but I am not. Stop playing your tricks with her. I know this age-old 'you are guilty and I am a victim' game pretty well.

Siddharth advanced towards Arnavji with a furious look. I was about to scream but then someday switched on the lights in the kitchen. Our eyes flew towards the intruder. Akaash Singh Raizada glanced in our direction with a perplexed look on his face. His unintentional intervention felt so divine right now. Not wanting to divulge any more details I forcefully dragged the reluctant Raizada from the kitchen, he kept protesting but I did not listen. Rather I crossed the living room and kept walking till we reached the porch.

Arnav POV

I wanted to punch Shukla in the face for disrespecting my lady but I could sense that Khushi wanted to avoid any kind of clash. Reluctantly I allowed her to pull me away from the scene. Her emotions were as clear as the sun during the daytime. Humiliation. Annoyance. Anger. And the most vivid of all...respect. The last one confused me a little. My wristwatch read 11.30 pm.

We now stood at the porch and the weather seemed to have calmed a little. The drizzling rain created a romantic atmosphere. Despite standing next to me Khushi Kumari Gupta seemed miles away from reality. I sighed watching the lost look on her face.

Tum theek ho?
(You alright?)

Patani.
(I don't know).

Khushi I am sorry...

Her eyes widened listening to my apology. As if she was not expecting to hear such a thing from my mouth. I thought my behaviour might have scared her. So apologizing seemed the best way to approach her. My voice trailed as her soft palm met my warm mouth. She shook her head gesturing me not to apologize. Her touch pleased the man in me. A few seconds later she dropped her hand and eyes to the floor.

Sorry to humein kehna chahiye. Dost banane chale the aur aapko hi khudse door krne lage. Aap to humein Sid ki sachai dikha rhe the aur hum samajhte rhe ki ye bas aapki jalan hai.
(I should be the one to apologize. I was simply trying to make friends and pushed you aside along the way. You were simply trying to show me the reality of Sid and I kept blaming you for being jealous).

Khushi no. Don't be sorry. Ismein tumhari koi galati nahi h.
(You are not at fault).

Par hum...
(But I...)

Cupping her face I kissed her forehead and forced her to look into my eyes. She should know about certain things about this world. Or else Khushi won't learn from her mistakes. When her eyes met mine I verbalized my thoughts.

The truth is tumhari simplicity ka sab advantage lena chahte hain. I hate that. Buaji ho ya Sid, learn to be adamant about your opinion Khushi. And always remember that I love you. Now smile for me.
(The truth is everyone tries to take advantage of your simplicity).

When I confessed my love to her, yet again she blushed in return. Slowly and gradually a smile replaced the sadness on her face. The gesture made me smile.

I like you very much Arnavji. Aur humare liye usse muh tod jawab dene ke liye shukria.
(And thank you for standing up for me).

The sudden revelation made me lift an eyebrow. Did Khushi just confess to me that she likes me? Her words made my heart flip. Dhak dhak. A strange tune played within my mind. While her sudden thank you made me realize why I saw the respect in her eyes a while ago. And then the unthinkable happened. For the first time, Khushi initiated a kiss leaving a warmth on my cheek, which made me wonder whether all of it was a dream. With a small smile, I turned sideways and gestured her to kiss my other cheek as well.

Isko bhi tumhari kiss chahiye.
(Don't abandon the other cheek).

Giggling at my cheesiness Khushi gave my other cheek a noisy kiss. My trick of lightening her mood worked and I wanting to prolong our moment I folded Khushi Gupta in my arms. The soft drizzle stopped altogether and a cold breeze disturbed our privacy. Not liking her trembling form I quickly pushed her inside the warm house.
To my immense relief, an angry Siddharth Shukla passed us and left the house without a goodbye. However, another voice distracted us.

You both can thank me later on. For now, I need my beauty sleep. Goodnight guys.

My brother muttered while turning to the other side on one of the mattresses as he tucked his blanket to his chin. Khushi raised her eyebrows in surprise. Oh, I forgot to inform Khushi, that my family members know about my fondness for her. I simply nodded not wanting to go into any details. As Khushi blushed in response my eyes halted to the corner of her dining table. The wooden piece of furniture drew me to itself. In a trance, I floated towards it. Involuntarily my hand touched the corner of the table.

All of a sudden I was transported to a vision that pricked my eyes. I could see someone insulting Khushi again and again. With teary eyes, my woman took in the poisonous words. And then to my horror, a bronze hand threw bundles of cash on the familiar dining table. I knew that hand very well. The hurt and pain plastered on my girl's features broke something inside me.

Khushi...

Arnavji...? What's wrong?

The memory felt like walking on shards of glass. I pulled my hand away as if someone burned it. The dripping concern in Khushi's voice felt like a punch in the gut. What the hell did I do? What kind of a monster am I? How could I treat her like that? How can I be so brutal to this kind woman? I felt her hand on my shoulder. Worried eyes met mine. I quickly pulled her hand from my shoulder and clutched it with both my hands.

I insulted you. I disrespected you. What can I do to show you how guilty I am for the sin I committed Khushi?

Arnavji? Kya hua aap aise kyun..?
(Why are you saying all this...?)

Maine issi table pe paise phekhe the na? I shattered your self-respect in a matter of seconds. I am such a beast. I bruised your pride and confidence. How can I claim to be in love with you when I  ruined our relationship so easily?
(I threw bundles of cash on this very table right?)

Losing my hold on her palm I trudged towards the sofa and sat on it holding my head in my hands. No matter how hard I try I cannot repent enough for her to forgive me. The loathing and guilt consumed me. I don't deserve a woman of substance like Khushi Kumari Gupta.

Khushi POV

If earlier anyone would have said that one day the cold-hearted ASR will repent for his mistakes, surely I would have had a good laugh listening to the joke. However, amnesia had done the unthinkable. And now even small things like my dining table triggered his memories. He sat on my sofa as tentacles of guilt clutched him. His helplessness made me unhappy.

Everything in my world telescoped down to the solitary figure slumped on my sofa. Nothing else existed. The connection I shared with Arnavji surpassed everything. Our past. Our class. Our differences. Determined to make things right between us I advanced towards him. Placing my palm over his hand I tried to see his face. Sensing my touch he lifted his head and hand towards me. With remorse filled eyes he uttered the most beautiful words to me.

Even if you were to change your mind and send me away...I would go, but I would never be far.

His long fingers came up to gently stroke my face. The pain in his voice made me weak in the knees.  Can someone change so much because of a mental illness? Am I that lucky to have found a love so deep and raw?

I can't be without you Khushi, you are all there is for me.

First one tear trekked down his cheek, then another. As the seconds passed by I sat beside him and allowed him to drain all that guilt that continued to consume him. This is not what I wished for. An apology would have sufficed. He was breaking down, calling names to his past self. Even the word monster reached my ears.

It is alright. Arnavji. Your repentance is visible in your actions. And I am always here. You cannot get rid of me so easily.

I added the last sentence with a chuckle to which he responded with a grin of his own. Wiping the tears off his face, I entangled my fingers with his, unable to understand how rapidly I was falling for him. My teacher once said that some people are so deep you fall into them and you never stop falling. Slowly and gradually Arnav Singh Raizada was becoming my world.

Sometime around 1 am Arnavji ordered me to go and sleep in my room. Opposed by the idea I tried to offer him another cup of tea but he put his foot down and I had no choice but to say goodnight. Finally, after a lot of ups and downs, the night was coming to its end. Shaking my head I fell on my pillow and in a matter of minutes sleep took over me.

Arnav POV

As the Gupta family were busy preparing a lavish breakfast for me and Akaash, I stood at the porch steps taking in the sunlight. After last nights storm, the sun felt like a balm to my soul. And I am not just referring to the weather.

A lot of things happened yesterday. I barged into Khushi's house. Had a tiff with my girl. Not to forget my moments with her which were interrupted by Siddharth Shukla. I believe he won't bother us anymore now.

My woman. Khushi Gupta. Her presence is a shining light that chased away the shadows of the void that plagued my amnesia riddled mind. Little pieces of my past – our past – were bleeding through the tattered remains of my memories. Memories that had been lost, been taken from me by a cruel twist of fate. Including the painful bits for which I won't be able to forgive myself. But my girl is a generous person, beautiful inside and out, who does not believe in keeping grudges.

I could hear snippets of Buajis conversation with Khushi. Buaji was enquiring about Siddharth's absence in her house this morning. I rolled my eyes as Khushi made up an excuse about some family emergency. With a sigh, I whirled and stepped inside the house only to hear something that made me halt.

I wanted to speak with Siddarth about Payal, Khushi. The two will be perfect for each other?

Kya? Jeeji and Sid?
(What?)

Haan. Isliye to kal tumko isharo mein bta rhe the ki ladka acha hai. Bhool gayi kya?
(Yes. Remember yesterday I kept nudging you, praising the guy and what not?)

I grinned as realization dawned upon me. So last night, Buaji was hovering around Sid like a mother hen because of Payal Gupta. Interesting. A wide-eyed, gaping Akaash sitting on the sofa made me chuckle. Now, this sounds good. I could see the wheels turning inside my brother's mind He swirled his head in my direction shocked by the information.

Feeling elated by the news I hopped towards the breakfast table and winked in Khushi direction who was pouring tea in the small cups on the kitchen counter. Her reaction was instant. Buaji screamed at her absent-mindedness as tea spilt all over the counter. Shaking my head I sat on the chair and began to plan my first date with this child-like woman. Now nothing will come between us.  No amnesia. No Buaji. No Shukla.

Flickering my eyes I noticed the gloomy look on my brothers face. Guess he never expected that Buaji would find Sid, as a match for Payal and not him. Nevertheless, I ate the bhajiye prepared by Khushi with new gusto. I had a date to plan with the woman of my dreams. Other things can wait.

AJHS - 13

Part - 13

Arnav POV

While my brother took care of my discharge I observed Khushi as she packed my belonging in a duffle bag. Finally, after five long days, I was allowed to go home. Di and Nani had visited me a couple of times. And both of them were hopping with excitement as they knew about my interest in Khushi Kumari Gupta their favourite girl.

As Khushi packed my stuff with a blush on her face I could not help but wonder about the dream that I had when I had been shot. Wanting to know more about that incident I directly questioned Khushi.

I saved you from a few goons when they bashed your head in the past right?

Halting her movements she stared back at me as recognition flashed in her twinkling eyes. Leaving the duffel bag aside she dashed to my side and placed her hand on my uninjured shoulder.

Aapko yaad aagaya woh din?
(Did you recall our previous moments?)

Yes, and you were wearing a beautiful wedding attire too. Kya tum mujhse shaadi krna chaahti thi?
(Were you planning to marry me?)

A dark flush dusted over her cheeks. Three big Os reflected on her features. Her yawning pupils and jaw dropping expressions made me chuckle. Bullseye. I should tease her more often. This flustered look suits her.

Hawww!! Nai. Bilkul nai. Woh to humare kapde chori hogaye the isiliye...
(What?!? No. Not at all. I had no other choice but to were that dress because someone stole my clothes...)

Jo bhi ho tum badi hot lag rhi thi Khushi.
(Well whatever. But you looked hot Khushi).

Stating my approval I snaked my arm around her petite waist. Now both of her hands were around my neck. Her touch ignited a fire inside me. I wanted her around me all the time. But she was not ready yet. A trial. Probably the most difficult task of my existence. I did not want to scare her with my obsessiveness. But her touch and jasmine fragrance were not helping the case at all. Her eyes were not meeting mine. The timid gesture made me sigh.

You did hurt those goons because they bashed my head. Your hand bled a lot that day. But when I asked for the reason behind the sudden protectiveness, you told me to get out of your vehicle midway.

I shut my eyes as hatred for my past self consumed me. Damn it. I am lucky that this woman is still giving me a chance to rectify my mistakes. Fluttering my eyes open I kissed her forehead as a gesture of my apology.

Sorry for my horrendous act. I believe my egoistic self could not accept the fact that I loved you so passionately. Hence I used my hatred and anger as a facade to hide my true feelings. But yes, even if it was only a dream, hitting those goons made me feel happy Khushi. Nobody can hurt you like that and get away.

Touching my forehead with hers I tried to enjoy the feeling of peace that would soon disappear. We would have to leave for our homes.

Two hours later Akaash came to my room after completing the discharge formalities. It took a little longer than usual. However, I was able to spend more time with Khushi. Also, I got the chance to talk with Payal Gupta. She was here to pick up Khushi. Her reluctance and disapproval towards my relationship with Khushi was something that I tried to ignore.

My past self had hated Khushi and her family so Payal's cautious behaviour made sense. A lot many people expected an apology from me. I was prepared for it. Also, I sensed a coldness between her and my brother Akaash. Very similar to the night of Di and Jeeju's anniversary party. If I am the reason behind their unhappiness then I will have to team up with Khushi to get them together. That will be my thank you to him. Akaash has been tolerant towards my frustrating behaviour in the past. It's time for payback.

Lavanya POV

Sitting on the shore of Sydney's famous beach with my Facebook friend Nandkishore Raizada I tried to make sense of the tale that he shared with me. After chatting on social media for a while I took the plunge and accepted his request for a date. We spoke about everything and nothing over coffee. His personality was simply beautiful. A charming fella with a heartwarming smile.

I did not want our date to end so quickly, so I suggested NK for a walk around the beach. We laughed about silly things for a while until a vital fact struck my mind. In our previous meeting, he called me Sana and had stated that I look like his wife. My mind was still confused. Unable to curb my curiosity I blurted out the one thing that was bothering me. Giving me a wry smile he sat on the shore and gestured me to join him.

I gulped listening to the strange yet twisted story. His wife, Sana, passed away three years back due to cancer. NK and his son Dhruv had a tough time handling such a big loss. I was shell shocked to see the pictures of his Sana. She resembled me so much that anyone would end up getting confused. Now everything made sense. I gulped recalling his expressions. Pain. Loss. Surprise. Shock. Denial. Love.

Nandkishore Raizada kept staring ahead at the orange hue of the sun. His eyes held a deep pain. I could understand the hurt completely. My one-sided love for ASR had made me bitter for so long. Love causes a strange restlessness. And NK lost the meaning of his life. He was still in recovery. Just like me. His silence made me pour out my own story of heartbreak.

Not long ago, I lost the one person who was my everything. He never loved me. I just assumed that what we shared was enough to last a lifetime. Is it not strange NK? Due to different reasons, we have lost the love of our lives.

You are right Lavanya. Life is strange. But Sana always told me one thing. Life is too short for regrets. Every moment counts.

He said the words to me with a contagious grin. We both ended up doodling on the sand. For the first time after so many months, I felt light-hearted. My mind was in peace.

Khushi POV

There are so many members in the Raizada family but Arnav Raizada specifically requested for you to stay the nights in the hospital. Why? A while ago he was your worst enemy. And now suddenly you both have become so comfortable with each other?

Jeeji fired one question after another in my direction, folding the laundry in the living room, her anger rose with every word she muttered in her livid state. Devi Maiyya why is this Laad Governor such a......sloth. Itna time nafrat krte rahe aur jab sar pe lagi tab jaake humse pyar kia. Ughhh. Sitting on the sofa I could do nothing but stare at the classic design of our bamboo table.
(He was busy hating me and only after hitting his head did he gain the wisdom to love me).

Thankfully Buaji returned soon from Vimla Auntie's house and I found the perfect excuse to avoid Jeeji. Pushing Buaji on the sofa I volunteered to make my special ginger tea for everyone. A few minutes later Buaji and Jeeji got busy talking about an upcoming wedding in the neighbourhood. Phew. Aaj to bach gaye. Par har baar Buaji humein bachane nai aayengi. I mused.
(Saved for the day. But Buaji won't be there to save me every time).

The air turned more chilly if possible. According to the news, it would rain heavily tonight. Humein sardi ki baarish bilkul pasand nahi. Before I could pour the hot beverage into the cups the device in my kurta began to vibrate. In a rush, I assumed it was Arnavji's call and did not notice the caller id before picking up. The call which I would regret answering for the rest of my life.
(I dislike the rains during the cold season).

Kaise hain aap?
(How are you?)

I am handsome like always Khushi.

Sid? Maaf kijiye humein laga ki koi...
(Oh sorry I thought you were...)

I flustered in realization. Thank god I did not say anything inappropriate in my enthusiasm. Devi Maiyya you saved me yet again. Before I could complete my sentence Sid interrupted me with something unexpected. His words left me surprised, to say the least.

Khushi you never invited me to your house for a family dinner. Toh maine socha main khud hi aajata hoon to enjoy your famous aloo puri. I will be there in a while. Hope you don't mind huh?

Oh! Ummm achha? Matlab...aap yahan? Haan haan kyun nai Sid. Issi bahane aapki Buaji aur Jeeji se mulaqaat bhi hojaegi.
(Well sure? I mean...you here? Alright. This will be the perfect chance for you to meet my family).

After explaining to him my exact location I quickly hung up and hastily informed Buaji and Jeeji about our upcoming guest aka my colleague Sid. Both the women exchanged a glance with each other but I did not have the time to find out the reason behind their reaction. Choosing to file this detail in the back of my mind I started dinner preparations for my dear friend.

Some time passed and with a little help from Jeeji, I managed to prepare 3 dishes for Sid. Aloo poori, Zeera pulao and Gajar ka Halwa. I observed that Buaji enquired about Sid with a twinkle in her eyes. And at one point I even noticed Jeeji asking her to stop her questions. As I was garnishing the dessert my phone buzzed again. Well, when you are multitasking your mind slows you down. So naturally, I made the same mistake again. Without checking the caller id I assumed it was Sid calling to know about the last few directions to my house.

Haan Sid to kahan tak pahunche aap? Kyunki aapka dinner to tayyaar hai aur Buaji to bahut betaab hain aapse milne ke liye...
(Yes Sid where are you? Because your dinner is ready and Buaji is desperate to meet you...)

Oh really? Tumne uske sath family dinner bhi plan krlia Khushi Kumari Gupta.
(So you are planning family dinners with him Khushi Kumari Gupta).

The crushed dry fruits in my hands slipped on the kitchen counter as a gasp escaped my lips listening to the cold and harsh tone of my boyfriend Arnav Singh Raizada. Times like these make me doubt that the ASR has amnesia. The familiar harshness felt like a bucket of cold water on a winter night.

Arnav POV

Even though I left Khushi a few hours ago still her absence made my heartache. Wrapped in a sling I could do nothing but rest as per the doctor's instructions. My hovering mother hen of a sister made sure that I did not move from the bed. And I obliged since I was not in the mood to argue with her. As the night grew, unable to curb my restlessness I called the love of my life Khushi. Maybe a little flirting will cheer me up. She answered in four rings.

Haan Sid to kahan tak pahunche aap? Kyunki aapka dinner to tayyaar hai aur Buaji to bahut betaab hain aapse milne ke liye...

Sid? What the? Did she just address me as...Sid?!? And what is the meaning of this stupidity? She is done making dinner for that nincompoop? And her Buaji is desperate to meet him? That good for nothing fella has already jumped the guns. Cosying up with Khushi's family. Smart move Sid. But I won't let you win over Buaji so easily. Over my dead body. Not happening. And Khushi? What the hell is she thinking?!? Crazy woman!! How dare she?!?

Oh really? Tumne uske sath family dinner bhi plan krlia Khushi Kumari Gupta.

Ye kaisa taana hai? Humne
unhe invite nai kiya. Sid ne khud hi kaha woh dinner pe aayenge. Mana karenge to manners ke against...
(Why are you taunting me? I never invited him. Sid invited himself to my house for dinner. How can I say No to him? Is it not against manners...

Clenching my teeth I tried to swallow the lava that bubbled within me. Now that idiot Shukla is planning to impress Khushi's family. How cliche of him...but his grand plan of self inviting himself to Laxmi Nagar won't be successful. He needs to accept the fact that Khushi Gupta is no longer single for fools like him to pounce on. Her words rang in my ears making me roll my eyes. Manners?!? Khushi should have made an excuse to avoid that loser.

Manners? Yeah right. Tumhe jo karna tha woh to tumne kia nai. Ab main wohi krunga jo mujhe sahi lagega.
(You did what you felt right. Now wait and see what I would do).

Leaving Khushi all the more confused I hung up on her. And then tried to come up with a plan of my own to resolve this unexpected issue. I checked my phone again to see the time. The clock read 7.45 pm. It is not too late. Maybe I could...oh yes. Of course. This will work. But then I won't be able to do all this on my own. Not with a recovering bullet wound. I need a helping hand to execute this. However, like a god sent help my brother Akaash Raizada walked into my bedroom with a tray of soup in his hand.

Bhai your dinner is here.

Akaash how fast can you drive if we leave for Laxmi Nagar in the next five minutes?

Sorry? What do you mean...

Khushi POV

I could not help but smile as Sid entered my home sweet home with a bouquet of roses for Buaji. Jeeji also blushed furiously when Sid kissed her hand praising her elegance and simplicity. If only Amma and Babuji were living here in Delhi with us then Sid would have brought a smile on their faces too.

Buaji melted like butter on hot pancakes when Sid mentioned him being a devotee of Lord Krishna. The two were in a deep discussion on Puranas when I dragged Jeeji towards the kitchen to lay the dinner table. She elbowed me with a mischief in her eyes.

Buaji is highly impressed by your friend Khushi. Maybe she will ask him to bring his Kundali, to ensure that your horoscope matches with him.

Shaking my head at her teasing I showed her my tongue. Sid had impressed Buaji in some twenty minutes or so of being in our house. Now Buaji will keep badgering me about getting married to a well-mannered man like him. And in South Delhi the pissed off ASR is hell-bent on spoiling my mood. Devi Maiyya why does he have to be so possessive when it comes to me? Sid is a good friend of mine. So what if he is having dinner at my place tonight? Cannot Arnavji be a little understanding? I did not even understand half of his words over the phone. It is the second day of our trial relationship and this is how he treats us? Ughhh.

Ten minutes later Sid joined the rest of us at the dining table. But as I began to serve him a knock on the door startled all of us. It is 8.30 pm. Who is at the door this late in the evening? I mused. As Jeeji answered the door, Buaji gestured me to continue serving Sid. Completing my task I turned to sit on my chair when a gust of wind alerted me about a familiar presence in my house. I glanced towards the door to see both the Raizada brothers advancing in our direction. Since Arnavjis one hand was wrapped in a sling he raised his other hand to his chest and greeted Buaji with a small smile.

Namaste Buaji. Hum yahan se guzar rahe the socha aapse milte chale. I hope you don't mind our unexpected arrival.
(We were passing through and thought to drop by Buaji).

Buaji and Sid both stood up from their seat surprised by the unexpected company. Buaji's mood changed all of a sudden. Hey Devi Maiyya why did Arnavji come here without consulting me? Buaji is clueless about his amnesia. I am sure she must be recalling our last meeting with him. When Arnavji had forced my hand to work for Anjaliji by throwing a bundle of cash on our dining table. While Sid was fuming with anger. Ughhh. Arnavji loves to rile him up. Sid had every right to get mad at me.

Buaji kept glaring at Arnavji who now understood that the matriarch of my family was not impressed by him. Thankfully, Akaashji saved all of us from the awkwardness that now surrounded us. He quickly spoke to Buaji distracting her attention from his brother.

Uhhh Namaste Buaji. Maaf kijiye hum aise yahan aaye. Aap agar busy ho to hum phir kabhi...
(I apologize for dropping unannounced. If you are busy then...)

Nahi nahi Nandkishore. Akaash bitwa aise mat boliye aap. Hum bas Khushi ke mehmaan ke sath khana kha rhe the. Aaplog bhi aayi sath khalenge.
(No no. Don't talk rubbish Akaash bitwa. We were simply having dinner with Khushi's guest. Come join us).

The weather worsened with each passing minute. Heavy rains accompanied by thunder and lightning made the atmosphere more gloomy if possible. Six of us sat at the table but for a while, no one spoke. Only the sounds of cutlery could be heard as the sky rumbled once more. I stabbed my food glaring at Arnavji who sat opposite to me enjoying my dishes as if it was him who was invited for dinner and not Sid. Finally, a few minutes later Buaji spoke out loud startling every one.

Akaash bitwa Siddharth is not only Khushi's colleague but a really good friend too. He is a well-mannered boy.

Akaashji nodded in agreement and this caused Arnavji to fume. Haah. Now he cannot even tolerate Buaji praising my friend. What did he expect that Buaji will be pleased by his unannounced visit to my place? By doing this he pushed Buaji into liking Sid even more. Humse baat kiye bina aagaye muh utha ke ghar. Ab bhugtu Jalkukde Singh Raizada. I mused.
(Who told him to drop by unannounced? Now sit and regret Jealous Singh Raizada).

Buaji you are too good. Aap jaise bade ghar mein ho to hum jaise chote toh kabhi bhi galat kaam krhi nahi sakte. Balki main to kehta hoon aajse aap meri bhi Buaji hain.
(Elders like you make a house home Buaji. In fact from today onwards you are my Buaji).

Kyun nai Nandkishore? Tumhari hi hain bitwa. Aise ladke to kismat walon ko hi milte hain Khushi. Lakhon mein ek hai. Oh why are not serving him the halwa? Siddharth she made this Gajar Halwa with lots of love.
(Why not? I am all yours. Such boys have become extinct in our society Khushi. One in a million).

A loud clank sound reached our ears as Arnavji dropped his spoon on the floor. Quickly serving the halwa to Sid I lowered myself to pick up the spoon. But Arnavji beat me to it and clutched my hand in his own. Thankfully Buaji was busy talking to Akaash and Sid and she missed Arnavji's antics.

Leave my hand. You have already crossed the line by self inviting yourself to my house.

I tried to get my hand out of his grip but he tangled my fingers in his staring at me with an intensity that I had to stop my struggles. In a husky tone, Mr Raizada whispered my name, forcing me to make eye contact with him.

I had no choice Khushi. Sid wants to impress your family so that Buaji can convince you that he is a better choice for you.

Pulling my hand with enough force I stood up with the spoon and I returned to my seat. Despite feeling Arnavji's eyes on me, for the rest of the dinner, I chose to concentrate on my meal. But his words struck a chord within my heart when I noticed Buaji praising Sid after every two seconds. So what if my family approves of Sid. Arnav Raizada has no right to barge inside my house just to assure his heart that I am only his girlfriend.

The storm and thunder continued to rage. It seemed that the heavy rain would continue for the rest of the night. As I was about to offer everyone my special ginger tea I observed something that made my eyes bulge significantly. Akaashji was holding my sister's hand under the table. While Jeeji ate the dessert with her left hand as if it was an everyday ritual. Wow. Raizada brothers love to hold hands huh. Not wanting to disturb their private moment I quickly announced that my special tea will reach the table soon enough. However, the peace disappeared altogether as Buaji caressed Sid's shoulder with a worried look and verbalized her concern.

How will you drive in this weather bitwa? Idhar hi ruk jao na aaj hum ko bhi acha lagega.
(Stay the night bitwa for my sake).

Idea to acha hai Buaji...
(Your idea is not bad Buaji...)

Three things happened as his voice trailed. A full-fledged smile appeared on Siddharth Shukla's face. A frown replaced the calm expressions of Akaash Raizada. And last but not the least bubbling rage was visible in the eyes of Arnav Singh Raizada who fisted his hand and sneered in the direction of my colleague.

While the thunder echoed in the sky above us, I felt the atmosphere in my little house darken. I knew it. I knew it in the back of my mind that this night would take too long to end. Closing my eyes I prayed to Devi Maiyya that nothing would diminish my small little world till the next sunrise.

Dhruv POV

As everyone left from the dining hall to retire to their respective rooms I sneaked inside the kitchen to microwave the spicy aloo samosa which Anji Bua had hidden from me. Plating the samosa I pressed the timer and bounced on my toes in excitement. As the smell of samosa wafted in the kitchen my anticipation to taste it increased tenfold. Finally, I pulled it out and poured a good amount of ketchup on it.

Ready to feel my favourite spicy salty snack I was about to take a bite of the hot samosa when suddenly my phone rang out loud startling me. My samosa fell on the kitchen counter creating a disturbing noise. My eyes widened when I realized that it was Chachu's call. Nannav Chachu ughhhh. Ek masoom bachche ko chain se samosa party bhi nai krne dete! Rolling my eyes I answered the call.
(He loves to disturb a little kid's snacktime).

Tumne to kaha tha ki ladkiyon ko romantic gestures pasand aate hain...phir Khushi mujhse itni jaldi naraaz kyun hojati hai? I am talking to you D? Aur woh Sid ab to usne hadh hi krdi hai...Dhruv are you there?
(You said girls are fond of romantic gestures...then why ain't Khushi accepting my apology? And that Sid has crossed all the limits...you there Dhruv?)

I pulled the phone away from my ear as his screaming voice almost punctured my sensitive eardrums. Gosh, what is wrong with these Raizadas? Cannot they handle a girl? Placing the samosa back on the plate I sat on the floor with my back against the fridge. From the sound of his voice I understood that he was pacing back and forth. This will take a little longer than I assumed. Another voice greeted me before I could frame an answer for Nannav Chachu.

Dhruv mujhe bhi baat krni hai tumse. It is about a girl. Agar, I Love You kehna ho toh whats the correct procedure...
(I need to talk to you as well Dhruv. If I wish to propose a girl how should I proceed...)

Shut Up Akaash! Meri love life mein waise hi bahut problems chal rahi hain aur yahan tum apni aur Payal ki story discuss kr rahe ho damn it!
(Bro my love life has lots of problems already and here you are discussing your and Payals love story? Damn it).

..Bh..bhai...? Do you know about me and Payal? When? How? I mean...
(Bro..brother?)

Munching on my warm samosa I tried to understand the issues of my Uncles. This is amazing. My goodness. Men I tell you. They are such fools. Taking another bite of my snack I comprehended the entire scene that took place in Laxmi Nagar. Mr Shukla will stay the night in Khushi Mam's place and Nannav Chachu hates this scenario. And Akaash Chachu plans on proposing to Khushi Mam's sister Payal. Nice. Mmmm. Samosa is good.

DHRUV?!? ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME? WHAT THE HELL? ARE YOU EATING SOMETHING??! Main yahan problem mein hoon aur tum wahan...SAMOSA KHA RHE HO?
(I am suffering over here and you are...ENJOYING SAMOSAS OVER THERE?)

I hiccupped in response. With a sweeping glance, I observed that no one was in the dark kitchen apart from me. Huh? How did he know?

Tum iss waqt kitchen mein wahi khate ho D. I know you. Now stop snacking and help me out!!
(I know you are in the kitchen D).

Okay okay. Relax. Lemme figure it out.
.
.
.
.
Precap: the overnight stay at Khushi's house results in lots of trouble, chaos and romance for Arnav and Khushi.

Happy New Year. Happy Lohri. Happy Makar Sankranti friends. Guys do leave a review. I need to know how is the story going. Thank you.

AJHS - 12

Part 12

Khushi POV

Standing in front of AR Designs I feel like it was another lifetime where I was constantly humiliated by Arnav Singh Raizada and his staff. I had promised myself that I would never cross the threshold of ASRs office in this life. But look how my circumstances have changed. Now the same egoistic man keeps begging me to visit this place. Amnesia has made Mr Raizada a mere common man. He too needs affection and attention like all of us. And he has accepted this fact.

Determined to keep the old memories buried deep inside my heart I trudged inside the building only to see Arnav Raizada's staff aligned in the corridor with their head bowed before me. As I passed them with a confused expression soft greetings reached my ears.

'Goodmorning Khushi Maam'

I gulped at the drastic change. Even the evil twin's Pam and Sim chose to stare at the tiles of the floor rather than meeting my eyes. Their nervous fidgeting made me aware that someone was keeping an eye on these people. Of course. How could I forget? My eyes flew up to the ceiling-high glass windows of his cabin. He was watching me with a strange intensity. Not liking this forced welcome I headed up straight for his cabin. My eyes did not waver and  Arnavji gave me a dazzling smile in return.

With a bang, I opened his door and stood before him. Once again we were in his cabin but this time I was not scared waiting for the inevitable to happen. For a change, he appeared nervous to me. I wanted to make him understand the reason why I keep rejecting his advances. He opened his mouth to speak but I stopped him immediately.

You want us to be together right? However, you have forgotten a major detail Mr Raizada. You have retrograde amnesia. A temporary condition in which you cannot recall your past. Keyword being temporary.

Khushi why do you keep repeating this I don't understand the point of...

Point ye hai Arnavji ki yaadasht jaane se pehle wale ASR humse nafrat krte the. NAFRAT. Iski kya guarantee hai ki aaj agar hum iss rishte ke liye haan krdein to kal jab aapko sab yaad aajayega aap humara saath nahi chodenge?
(Well the point is that before Amnesia your ASR self used to hate me. HATE. What is the guarantee? I mean in case tomorrow you recall your memories won't you break up with me?)

His jaw dropped open in realization. Finally, my words made sense to him. After all, he is a Harvard MBAian. Now there is no misunderstanding between us. He knows the reason behind my constant rejection. However, the shock of my words disappeared almost instantly. All of a sudden Arnav Raizada emoted something strange and scary. Not liking his intense features I turned around to leave only to sense a bronze arm clasp around my stomach. His unexpected touch made me shiver. My back collided with his firm chest.

Iska matlab agar guarantee miljaye to tum meri hojaogi na Khushi? Hamesha ke liye?
( This means that if you have the guarantee then you will be mine Khushi? For forever right?

Huh?

His touch distorted my perception of reality. My body was not willing to cooperate with my mind. I tried to be coherent but the way he tightened his hand around my waist only a moan escaped my lips. His husky voice near my neck made me shiver.

Sawaal saaf hai Khushi. Agar kal ki main surety doon to kya tum meri izzat ban jaogi? Bolo Khushi?
(My question is clear Khushi. If I promise to give you the surety of tomorrow then will you become mine? Tell me Khushi?)

Pushing away from his hold I breathlessly tried to find my escape but unfortunately during the push and pull we somehow switched places. And now Arnavji stood tall guarding the door with a strange wildness in his eyes. Our shallow breaths echoed around his red and white cabin. I tried to appear confident by using a threatening cold voice.

Ye kya tareeqa hai humse baat krne ka haan? Tameez ke daire mein rehkar humse...
(Where are your manners? Talk with respect...)

He rolled his eyes and advanced towards me. My words did not change his stance. He kept walking till I was forced to lean on one of the windows. Arnavji shackled me in seconds, placing his palms on either side of my head.

I cannot change the past if you don't give me a chance. And I am tired of begging Khushi Gupta. Tum samajhti kyun nai ho ki agar tum nai mili na to yahan dukta hai. Bahut dukta hai. Tum samajh rahi ho na?
(Don't you understand that your absence hurts damn it. It is unbearable. Are you getting me?)

He poked his chest twice before grabbing my shoulders lightly. His words. His eyes. The vulnerability. Our circumstances. Everything was pushing me to agree and say yes. A small tear rolled down my eyes watching the emotion of love fill his baby brown orbs. But then my eyes turned behind to see the glass wall. The very place where Arnav Raizada had cornered me. Where he had left my hand resulting in me falling down. When his employees made fun of my vulnerabilities.

Jab aapne humein yahan se neeche giraya tha na...tab humein bahut chot lgi thi. Kya tab aapka dil dukha tha Arnavji?
(When you pushed me from here...It hurt me too. Did your heart clench watching me in pain then, Arnavji?)

He immediately left my arms as if I had burned him. However, for the first time, he acknowledged his errors. With a shake of his head, he responded a No. Retreating from my personal space he chose to sit on the sofa across his desk. With his head in his hands, he whispered in a soft tone.

Patani main kis type ka jaanwar tha Khushi. Jisne tum jaisi pari ko khud se door kar dia. Par I promise main sab theek krdunga. Even if by chance I remember my past then too we will be together.
(I don't know what kind of an animal I was to you Khushi. A beast you pushed away an angel like you. But I promise you my repentance).

That's your belief. The reality is different.

Giving me a small smile he stood up from the sofa and grabbed a file from his desk. Holding the file in his hand he waved it in my direction. The gesture left me perplexed. When I did not react the way he expected me to Arnavji handed me to documents with his patent smirk.

You are a permanent shareholder of ARD Khushi Kumari Gupta. This is the reality. Meri nayi will mein pehla naam tumhara hai. Waise hi jaise iss dil mein hai. I am in love with you Khushi. Is this guarantee enough for you?
(Yours is the first name on my new will. Just like it is on my heart).

A gasp escaped my lips hearing his wild confession. I am a shareholder in his company? Even in his will? Kya??? Hey, Devi Maiyya Arnavji humse pyaar? Woh humein sirf pasand nai krte...woh humse pyaar?? He nodded with a grin. Before my mind could make sense of his words something managed to distract me. A bright red laser dot flashed over his collarbone. I blinked twice. As if someone was aiming at him...as if someone wanted him to die? As comprehension dawned upon me I screamed out his name. But unfortunately, the bullet was too fast for me to make a move and save him.

ARNAVJI!!!!

ARNAVJI!!!

Blood. Soo much blood. Bright red blood stained his white shirt in seconds. He pressed a hand on the wound and whimpered in pain. My screams probably alerted everyone. Everything faded in the background. Akaashji and Amanji caught him as he staggered. His eyes rolled, his neck tilted and he fell unconscious.

I kept screaming like a banshee as Amanji asked me to calm down. I could see him clicking his fingers in front of his face. Finally, he cupped my cheeks a little firmly and ordered me to compose myself. Staring at Arnavji's bloody form I nodded gulping in shock as realization dawned upon me.

Akaashji with a little help from Amanji placed Arnavji on the sofa and announced that the ambulance is on the way. Huh? When did he call for an ambulance? I never heard him? I must have said the words out loud because Akaashji replied instantly.

When you were screaming at the top of your voice Khushiji.

Embarrassed by his answer I wiped the tears that kept falling from my face. Before I could apologize for my behaviour Amanji said something that made my eyes as big as the saucers.

ASR keeps mumbling your name. He wants you. So you are coming with us in the ambulance.

I bobbed my head and a few minutes later I left AR Designs in the ambulance. I chose to sit next to him. Now even I could hear him mumbling my name. Holding his hand in mine I could not help but recall how Arnavji had confessed his feelings for me. Hum yahi to chahte the na Devi Maiyya. To phir jab aaj unhone kehdia ki unko bhi pyar hai to hum kyun darr gaye? Kyun?? Kyon uss pal humein woh din yaad aagaya?
(This is what I desired the most Devi Maiyya. So when he confessed his love to me today why was I terrified? Why?? Why was I stupid enough to recall our past?)

Khushi I need to know if you saw someone near ASRs cabin. You were the only ones who were present there. Did you notice anything strange?

Turning my head towards Aman Mathur I gave him my infamous glare. How dare he? How can he ask me such a question when Arnavji is in such a critical condition? He flinched in response. Akaashji looked at us and tried to intervene. But the coldness of my voice shut him up rather quickly.

Maaf kijiye goli lagte huye humein hosh nai tha. Warna uss aadmi se hum uska naam aur address pooch lete!
(I apologize for being so incoherent when the gunshot happened. Or else I would have asked the shooter for his name and address!)

Hours later we were still sitting outside in the emergency ward. But the rest of the Raizadas had joined us a while ago. They had asked me to leave umpteen number of times but something made me stay back.

A while ago his Doctor had explained that the bullet has been removed successfully. But since it was aimed at Arnavjis bad shoulder he was clueless about the extent of damage that might have occurred. Was the Diwali accident not enough Devi Maiyya? Why are you doing this to him?

Oh god, I just want to see him fit and fine once again. Then I would leave. He is my....friend. So I will have to make sure that he is awake. Yeah, keep fooling yourself Khushi. My inner Khushi taunted me. Though the hospital corridor was silent, Arnav Raizadas words kept echoing around my ears.

Tum samajhti kyun nai ho ki agar tum nai mili na to yahan dukta hai. Bahut dukta hai. Tum samajh rahi ho na?

Shaking my head I stood up and excused myself from the family. I needed to clear my head. A walk might help. Can I move on? Can I accept Sid in my life? What if he asks for more? Can anyone replace Arnavji in my heart? The questions kept bouncing in my head. A sigh escaped my lips when a familiar voice called me out. But I kept staring at the trees ahead.

Khushi Maam it is cold outside. Why don't you come inside?

Please leave me alone Dhruv.

I can help you if you want?

Rolling my eyes I tilted my head towards my ten-year-old student. He was staring at me with a familiar intensity. Gosh, he reminds me so much of Arnavji. It seems he can read my mind. Pursing my lips I chose to accept his help.

Kabhi aisa kyun hota hai ki hum chaah kar bhi uss shaqs se door nahi ho paate jo humare liye galat hota hai?
(Sometimes I wonder that why cannot we stay away from that one person who is not good for us?)

Kyunki ussi ke saath humein acha lagta hai. Khushi Maam nobody likes going to school right? Par school mein ache din bhi aate hain like the class party, picnic and teachers day? It is simple. Exams se darr ke main school nai chod sakta. So you got to do what you got to do.
(Because that one person also makes us happy. Khushi Maam nobody likes going to school right? But there are good days filled with class parties, picnics and teachers day as well right? It is simple. The fear of exams is not greater than my love for school. So you got to do what you got to do).

My eyes touched my hairline hearing his explanation. Did he solve my problem? School? Arnavji is a school? With good days and bad days? Huh? Kya hum darr kar unse door jaa rhe hain? Kya sach mein humein apne dil ki sunni chahiye? I mused. The little fella tugged my hand and dragged me inside talking about the cold weather of Australia where he lived all his life. But my heart was beating like a machine gun. As if it had a mind of its own.
(Am I running away from him? Should I listen to the voice of my heart?)

I am in love with you Khushi. Is this guarantee enough for you?

Can I do this? Can I accept him in my life? Can I accept both his temper tantrums and intense love for me? Dhak dhak. My heart fluttered as I could not help but feel strange happiness bubbling inside me. What if I ask him for a trial relationship? Bas jab tak humein pakka nai hota hai ki woh humein kisi bhi qeemat par nahi chodenge. And if things work out maybe...
(Like a temporary assurance till I can trust him completely).

I am in love with you Khushi. Is this guarantee enough for you?

Dhruv POV

What is she doing right now?

She is standing aloof near the entrance of the hospital Pops. Should I make my grand entrance now?

Nodding into the phone I agreed with my father and gave her a few minutes. According to my Dad now was the time to strick. The iron is hot. So taking advantage of the situation I took in my father's order and hung up the phone. Acting like an innocent student who was worried for his teacher I made her open up to me. She was being difficult but my innocent 10-year-old act did the job and she finally spilt the truth.

Knowing what she wanted to hear I answered in my no-nonsense tone as if my solution was what she needed to live better. As expected a light bulb went off and my suggestion caused her eyes to widen in disbelief. Giving her the time to make a decision I dragged her inside on the pretext of the cold weather.

Though I feel bad for Chachus condition I have faith in Khushi Maam. She would nurse him better and after a while, he will recover. Love can cure any illness. That's what Popsi says to me all the time. When we were a few feet away from the waiting area I stopped abruptly and turned towards my teacher. Whose eyebrows rammed into her hairline in confusion.

Khushi Maam...

Yes, Dhruv?

Please try to forgive him.

Dhruv beta...
(Kiddo..)

I know this is your matter. Par second chance easily nai milta. What if he was shot to death today? Aap unhe kho deti Maam.
(We don't get second chances so easily. What if he was shot to death today? You would have lost him Maam?)

Astonished by my words she stared back at me as if I was saying something in Latin. I knew that talking about death was a  below the belt move but you got to do what you got to do. I am my Uncle's nephew. I know very well how to crack a deal. A tear fell from her eye socket. Checkmate. Passing her a smile I left her hand and ran away to sit with my Anji Bua. A couple of minutes later the nurse told us that Chachu is out of danger and will have to stay overnight under observation.

Everyone sighed in relief hearing the good news. Akaash Chachu and Aman Uncle pumped their fists eagerly. I swung my head to the side to see Khushi Maam smiling through her tears. This is a piece of good news.

Arnav POV

The bullet pierced my shoulder and I felt a strange warm liquid seeping into my clothes. My body registered the excruciating pain as My eyes caught with Khushis shock filled orbs. My staggering form lost the battle to the darkness. Flittering in and out of consciousness I gathered a vital detail about my past.

My possessiveness for Khushi Gupta is not something new. I do love her passionately. My mind picked out the perfect memory to recall. Clad in an orange wedding outfit the woman of my dreams stood between a group of people and danced around merrily to the loud drum beats. Her beauty left me spellbound.

But then abruptly the scene changed into something horrible. Strange men surrounded us and pushed her with such force that her head banged on the jeep nearby. And believe me, the sight of her wounded forehead awakened the beast inside me. Determined to punish those low-lives I sauntered in their direction and punched them left and right. The one who tried to hurt Khushi bled profusely. Enraged, I craved for more of his blood. Suddenly she held my shoulder and asked me to stop. I let him go and stared at my bruised knuckles for really long. Did I just do that? I mused.

Bhai...

The dream or rather a memory turned hazy as I heard someone calling me out. I wanted to continue my dream. I wanted to see if Khushi was fine or not. But the irritating interrupting voice kept ringing in my ears pushing me away from my dream to the familiar darkness.

Bhai can you hear me...

As if the question was a signal to my brain I felt myself responding to it. With my blurry eyes, I tried to make sense of my surroundings. The darkness was replaced by a brightly lit room. And a hazy figure came closer to my line of sight.

Bhai...

Akaash.

I mumbled feeling a strange numbness around my left shoulder. My brother was trying to talk to me but the heavy meds made me incoherent. Only half of his words were making sense to me.

.....worried.....everyone is in....waiting room.

Wait did he just say, everyone?
Wanting to confirm his jumbled words I whispered the one person's name who I wanted to be here. Next to me. With her hand in mine.

Khushi...bring her to me.

Saying the words I slipped into unconsciousness once again.

Shyam POV

My fingers dug in his jugular as he choked with eyes touching his hairline. I knew he wanted my mercy. But what am I supposed to do? It is his mistake that he was unable to follow a simple order. The news of the ASRs death should have been spread like fire in the media by now. However, my most trusted shooter betrayed me by failing this assignment.

He was trying to say something. Bored with his antics I became a little curious about his words. So instead I threw him on the floor and leaned against the wall patiently. Let's see what he has to say. I mused.

After several minutes when he was able to catch his breath the man uttered something that sparked my interest. The shooter mentioned the reason for his failure. Khushi Kumari Gupta. Hmm. So the cold ruthless businessman is capable of falling in love. I smiled in triumph. Now I know how to torture Arnav Singh Raizada. I have been a fool all along. The best way to hurt my enemy is to attack his weakness. He did the same when he destroyed my Dad. I need a new plan. A plan that will involve Ms Gupta. With a grin, I pulled out two bundles of cash and threw them next to my shooter who still trying to breathe normally.

Thank you for letting me know about ASRs woman.

Khushi POV

I stayed the night in the hospital with Akaashji while the rest of the Raizadas had reluctantly left for Shantivan. When Akaashji came out of Arnavji's ward he confessed that his brother wanted me near him. I could only nod at him blushing furiously. I wanted to see him too. But Akaashji said that Arnavji was still feeling drowsy due to the effect of the strong medicines.

I slept on the sofa bed in Arnavjis room. Only one person was allowed to stay in the room and Akaashji volunteered to sleep in his car. Thanking him profusely I took the sofa bed.

Around 5 am I woke up hearing noises in the room. Arnavji was trying to pour water into a glass but because of his bad shoulder, he failed miserably. In a jiffy, I rushed towards him and handed him a glass full of water. He stared intently in my direction. And I felt my face immediately go red, the heat dancing across my cheeks like a gasoline explosion over driftwood.

Aap theek toh hain?
(Are you alright?)

He nodded but did not leave my eyes for a second. I knew he was desperate for my answer. But I took my own sweet time. There was a small lamp on the table across the hospital bed. The room appeared to be warm and cosy because of the device. Turning towards him I slowly held his other hand that was not covered in a sling.

I want to give this thing between us a chance. But I am scared that once your amnesia is cured you will leave me. So how about a trial relationship?

A trial relationship?

He raised his eyebrow with a small smirk on his face. My idea intrigued him. I knew it would. The bronze fingers around my hand tightened all of a sudden. His approval gave me the confidence to continue my speech.

Haan. Bas ek baar humein bharosa hojaye ki aapka Amnesia theek hone ke baad bhi kuch nai badlega, phir hum...
(Yes. A trial till I am sure that you are worthy of my trust and won't leave me even when you are cured of amnesia, after that...)

Phir tum kya Khushi? Meri hojaogi na? For Hamesha.
(After that what Khushi? Will you be mine? I want Forever).

Unable to take his intensity I nodded and tried to remove my palm from his hold. But Arnavji was in a playful mood. I kept tugging my hand but his grip was firm. I lifted my eyes to meet his naughty ones. I could see mischief in them.

I learnt a few things in the AR office. Deal ke baad signature bhi krne padte hain Khushi.

Kya?!? Kaunsi deal? Aur kaise signatures?
(What?!? What deal? And what signatures?)

Grinning at my confused expressions he lifted my hand only to kiss it with his warm lips. A shiver ran down my spine at the unexpected gesture. I felt the heated angry red flush colouring my cheekbones. When I tried to retreat my hand he tugged me towards him. Our noses almost touched each other when he whispered.

Both the parties are supposed to sign the deal Khushi Kumari Gupta.

Leaning away from Arnavji I tried to catch my breath. He was waiting for me to kiss his hand as well. Knowing that he won't let go without my...signature, I quickly pecked the back of his hand. As his hold loosened I finally rescued my hot red palm from him.

You should sleep some more, it is only 5 in the morning.

You are staying?

Uh, hun.

Good. Go back to the sofa-bed honey.

The endearment made me smile. I walked away to the sofa bed and clung to the blankets. We kept watching each other till sleep took over our tired forms.

Devi Maiyya I hope this decision of mine won't backfire. Please make sure that this temporary relationship becomes a permanent one.

Precap: Sid's closeness with Khushi makes Arnav jealous.

AJHS - 11

Part - 11

Khushi POV

Sometimes you are made to believe that your life is in your hands, that you could mould it as per your needs and desires. Strength, power, determination and focus, all of these lose the battle when fate and destiny have other plans for you.

When the cruel, cold-hearted, Arnav Singh Raizada rejected me I broke down. My emotions went haywire. But with time and effort, I undid the damage done to my fragile heart. I tried to move on. I met Sid and Dhruv. I made new friends too.  However, the man returned to my life. This time with a vulnerability attached to a strange persona. Claiming to be a different person altogether. So I pitied him. On the grounds of humanity, I initiated a friendship with the one person who did not think twice before slicing my heart.

And yet again Arnavji surprised me. Recalling a few chunks of our memory he is now determined to stake his claim over my heart. What does he think of himself huh? How dare he assume that we can continue our game of cat and mouse from where we left off? Ughhh.

Leaning against my bedroom window I glanced at the stars that twinkled in the night. The moon surrounded by the clouds kept playing peek a boo from the sky. Thoughts of Arnavji's confession swirled in my mind. He likes me. He promised to heal my wounds. He wants me to give him a fair chance. And he hates my friend Siddharth.

Just because he is suffering from Amnesia I am supposed to forgive and forget our past. And even if I do accept his grand proposal what if one fine day he recalls every single detail of our toxic relationship? Am I supposed to keep sewing back my heart every time Arnav Raizada is done playing with it? No. Not again. If he thinks that one apology will rectify his previous mistakes then he is highly mistaken.

Agar Sid ne humein phir se ghumne ke le liye poocha toh hum unhe mana nai karenge. Apni Zindagi ka faisla ab hum soch samajh ke krunge.
(If Sid will ask me out for a date again tomorrow then I won't say No to him. Now no one will force me to decide against my will).

Lavanya POV

With wide eyes, I stared back at the screen of my laptop. A few minutes ago I had logged in to my Facebook account. After checking back on a few friends I posted a few pictures of my stay in Australia when a friend request from a Nandkishore Raizada popped up on the corner of my laptop screen. The profile picture had a familiar face staring back at me.

It was the man who had banged into me the other day. The one who compared me to his wife. He had called me Sana. Wow. He looks hot. Should I accept his request? He appears to be decent.
Well, there is nothing wrong with getting to know someone. I am finally moving on from ASR. It's high time that  I go out with a new guy. My mind drifted back to the moment when he had pulled me by the elbow. His touch ignited a burning sensation inside me. The electrifying connection had left me with goosebumps.

Accepting the request I clicked on his profile. Oh my. Nandkishore Raizada is a hot mess. The last name made me doubtful though. Is he a relative of ASR? Of course not. The surname is not so uncommon. I should put my overthinking to rest. Oh!! He has a son. Interesting. A single dad who is too handsome for his good.

Hi...

He used the chat messenger to send a greeting to me. His timing is good. A brownie point for sure. With a grin, I replied instantly. Sipping my coffee I kept talking to him for a while.

This is refreshing. Let's see what destiny has in store for me little old me.

Arnav POV

The next morning, flanked by Aman and Akaash I walked inside the red and white building that had a huge logo of AR on it. Pride clouded my mind as I conceded my accomplishment. My success. I basked in the glory of my fame. Security staff, front desk executives and the rest of my employees welcomed me one by one as I prowled through the corridor.

My persona unnerved them. According to Aman Mathur, my manager, I am a ruthless workaholic businessman who loves to scare his staff. Not wanting to change that I simply nodded as everybody greeted me. Instead of heading to my cabin, I stood at the landing of the stairs with my hands across my chest. With a sweeping glance, I noted the worried looks they exchanged amongst themselves. Taking that as my cue I began my speech.

Good morning everyone. It is me ASR. Yes. I am back. Let me make a few things clear. Retrograde Amnesia is not going to stop me from bagging business deals anymore. So stop being lazy and start working damn it.

Everyone returned their cubicles as I swirled around to head up to my cabin. The glass walls of my office appealed to my eyes. I could easily see myself keeping an eye on my staff. Chuckling at the design I sat on my chair playing with a paperweight as Aman advanced towards me.

ASR are you sure about your decision regarding Khushi Gupta being the new shareholder of AR?

His words felt like an inferno all over my body. How dare he question my decision? Who gave him the right to go against my word? Does he too have feelings for Khushi like that Shukla? No way. I am not gonna entertain any more competition. He needs to be put in his place. Palming the paperweight I stood up from my chair and sauntered towards Aman leaving him enough space to retreat. He was sweating bullets right now. Great. Using every bit of my strength I threw the object in my hands only to hear the shattering of my glass walls. The action was enough to gain everyone's attention.

Khushi Kumari Gupta will become the new shareholder of AR and that is final. Why are you questioning my idea? Do you like her? Huh? Tell me.

I glanced below at my audience who were watching our interaction with wide eyes. Good. Everybody should know about the woman who will own every dime that I have earned from scratch. I cocked my head to face Aman who gulped feeling the bubbling anger towards him.

Nn..no. No ASR. I have zero interest in Ms Gupta. I swear. It is just that you felt immense hatred for her in the past so it made me wonder...

Stop wondering Mathur. And this goes for the rest of you too. Khushi Gupta is important to me. Forget what happened in the past. She will be treated like a damn VIP in AR from now on. Is that clear?!?

My voice echoes through the building. My employees bobbed their heads like robots as I locked my eyes with everyone present below. I smirked as my plans were set in motion. Striding back I sat behind my desk and stared fiercely at a frightened Aman.

I will start the paperwork ASR.

Wait! I need you to do something for me first.

It took me a while to explain to Aman what I wished for. After I finished he stared at me with a gaping mouth. I grinned in return. I knew my idea was bordering obsessive but I have to do everything to gain Khushi Gupta's attention.

Khushi POV

By the time my working hours were over, I was dead tired. Even meeting Dhruv did not help me much. The sweet fella was adamant about another outing but I was too exhausted to entertain the idea. Another outing will result in another spat with his Uncle. Why cannot Arnavji be like Dhruv? This man loves to create a ruckus around me.

Suddenly out of the blue my phone went off startling me from my train of thoughts. I picked up my device to check the caller id only to give out an exasperated sigh. Arnav Singh Raizada seriously needs a new hobby. Sitting on my bed I answered the call but did not speak a word. I was greeted by silence in return. Whatever. Agar baat nahi krni hai to inhone call hi kyun ki. Hum bhi kuch nai bolenge Devi Maiyya. However, Devi Maiyya was not on my side today. To scratch an itch on my feet I used my bangle clad hand and the noise was loud enough for Mr Raizada to hear.
(If he does not wish to talk then who asked him to make this call. I too won't speak a word, my goddess).

Oh, toh aaj tum nahi tumhari chudiyan mujhse baat krengi?
(Oh so tonight your bangles will talk to me instead huh?)

Aap kya chahte hain Arnavji?
(What do you want Arnavji?)

Tumhe nai pata?
(You don't know?)

The quick response caused my heart to flutter. There was a strange huskiness in his otherwise rough voice, involuntarily causing a shiver down my spine. Dhak dhak. Dhak dhak. His voice reminded me of our proximity and almost kiss on Diwali night. My lips trembled as I recalled our closeness. His breath had touched mine that fateful night. I shook my head trying to get rid of the emotions that were threatening to take over my mind.

Nai pata humein samjhe aap Mr Raizada. Aap humse door rahiye. Aur agli baar humein phone karne ki...
(I don't know you get that Mr Raizada. Stay away from me. And next time don't you dare try to initiate any sort...)

Dhamka rahi ho mujhe?
(Are you threatening me?)

Why? Why why why?!? Why does he use his voice as a tool to attract my attention. I am trying so hard to end the constant toxicity that we shared so that this cycle will stop once and for all. But no Arnavji cannot digest the fact that I am moving on from him.

Sach bata rhe hain. Iss sab ka ab koi fayda nahi hai.
(I am telling you the truth. You are wasting your time).

Tumhe kya lagta hai haan? Mujhe nai pata iss waqt tumhara dil kitna tez dhadak raha hai? Mujhe tumhari saanson ki awaaz nai aarhi hai? Tumhari kaampte hont mujhse jo nai keh rhe hain na Khushi mujhe woh bhi pata hai.
(What do you think? I don't know anything about your escalating heartbeat? I cannot hear your shallow breaths? I can even comprehend the things your trembling lips have not uttered yet, Khushi).

An involuntary gasp escaped my lips hearing the truth from his mouth. How can he know all this? Is he here somewhere around? I quickly got up and rushed towards my bedroom window to see if he was watching me from nearby. But there was not a soul on the empty street in front of me.

Ab mujhe dekhne ke liye khidkhi ke paas jaake mat khadi hona. Bahar thand hai. So jao. Save your energy for tomorrow. Goodnight.
(Now don't stand next to your window in hopes of seeing me. It's cold outside. Sleep tight).

Before I could scream at him for his nonchalant behaviour the man hung up on me leaving me agape staring at my phone. How dare he? Who the hell is he to order me around? One second. Hold the phone. Why did he say that I need to save my energy for tomorrow? Ab kya chal raha hai Arnavji ke dimaag mein? Hey Devi Maiyya kal kya hone wala hai? Humto off bhi nai le sakte kyunki kal ek special event hai language school mein.
(Now what's cooking in Arnavjis mind? Oh lord, what's gonna happen tomorrow? I cannot even take a day off because of the special event in the school).

Wait. Oh yes. Why did I not think of this before? He is doing all this to catch my attention. This is his new technique to bother me like always. He purposely said those words to keep me up all night. Nope. I am not gonna fall for this trick.

Switching off my night lamp I laid down on my bed and prepared myself to sleep.

The next day I practically hopped my way to reach the school. There were no classes to teach today because we were having a big event. The founders had finally met the perfect sponsors to open a new branch of our school in Noida. Siddharth had discussed with me many times how no sponsors were agreeing to join hands for the extension of our language school. Devi Maiyya humari dua hai ki jisne bhi bachon ke liye is naye school mein humari madad ki woh jo chahe usse mil jaye.

The event was held in the small auditorium of our building. I waved enthusiastically at a smiling Sid as he caught my eye. He was speaking to Mr Sharma, one of our founder members. The man who was kind enough to help me grab this job. I advanced towards the duo. When Mr Sharma immediately greeted me with a grin of his own.

How are you beta?

I am good Sir. It's been so long since we saw each other.

Work keeps me, busy kid. It took a lot of effort to find sponsors for our Noida branch. I will introduce you to them soon. Please show your best to them. Now take a seat with the rest of the teachers.

Nodding in agreement I sat in the second row allotted for the teachers. A couple of minutes passed and soon a group of people entered the auditorium. The room darkened and the spotlights on the stage were switched on. We welcomed our sponsors with loud applause. As they took the steps to be on the stage my phone vibrated twice. Ughhh not again. I looked down to read the message from Arnav Raizada.

Ab to tumhe mujhse baat krni hi padegi.
(Now you will have no choice but to talk with me).

I fumed in anger. What does he think of himself? Mr Sharma's welcome speech reached my ears as I typed in a response furiously. However, I had to stop midway because of the one particular name that Sharma Sir mentioned when he introduced us to our sponsors. The name reverberated around the auditorium as I slowly lifted my head.

An audible gasp escaped my mouth watching the three familiar faces sitting comfortably on the sofa chairs under the spotlight. Akaash Singh Raizada, Aman Mathur and of course Arnav Singh Raizada. His eyes met mine at the same time. He teased me with his patent smirk. My eyes widened in realization. And my ears twitched hearing the announcement of made my Sharmaji.

Please give a big hand to AR Designs who will sponsor our Noida School.

What the hell is this? I told him to join AR and he is using it as a medium to manipulate me. He did this purposely. I should have understood his indirect message yesterday itself when he advised me to save on my energy. With a clenched jaw, I witnessed how he wrapped the founders around his pinky. Our school was looking for a sponsor desparately and he came in as a saviour. I was about to get up and leave the audi when I recalled Mr Sharma's previous words.

...It took a lot of effort to find the sponsors for our Noida branch. I will introduce you to them soon. Please show your best to them.

No-no-no. He cannot take over my workplace like that. This is the height of being unprofessional. I glared at him as he smiled in my direction. Taking a deep breath I tried to compose myself. Get it together Khushi. Do not allow him to win this match. Get even. Be as sarcastic as possible. I gave myself a pep talk as he stood up to take over.

Goodmorning everyone. I am Arnav Singh Raizada. This is an exceptional language institution. My nephew is a student here. And it's a pleasure to sponsor this initiative taken by Sharma Language School. I request your support and cooperation in this collaboration. Thank you for having me here.

He looked in my direction as he spoke the last sentence. Yeah right. I will show you cooperation Raizada. The staff clapped and agreed with loud energy making me roll my eyes. Just like me, there was another person who did not like Arnavji's involvement in our school. I spotted Sid in the front row. He was scowling at our guest of honour.

Arnav POV

Mr Sharma the founder of the language school kept praising me. However, my attention was focused on the changing expressions of the spectacular woman with whom I shared an enigmatic bond. The astonishment laced on her features made me smirk. When anger replaced the shock on her face I understood that she knew what I meant for this school.

I took the mike from the founder and as a good orator impressed my audience with my thank you speech. She looked like a goddess in her angry avatar. My inner beast grinned evilly as a furious Siddharth Shukla greeted my line of sight. Take that Shukla. I am still unbeatable. Nobody can claim what is mine. No one.

As the event came to its end I was introduced to the staff of the language. Mr Sharma happily enquired about the language my nephew was learning from his school. With a grin I locked eyes with Khushi who appeared to be all uninterested.

Oh yes. My nephew Dhruv takes Hindi classes from this institute. He admires his Hindi teacher.

Hindi? Matlab Khushi aapke Dhruv to padhati hai? Idhar aao Khushi greet Mr. Raizada.
(Means Khushi is your nephew, Dhruv's tutor? Come here Khushi and greet Mr Raizada).

Hello Mr. Raizada. Nice to meet you.

Heavy sarcasm dripped from her overly polite tone as Khushi quickly looked sideways. She was hell bend on keeping her distance. I returned the greeting lifting my hand to shake hers leaving her no option but to hold mine. As her skin came in contact with my own I thumbed the back of her hand making her eyes meet mine. My touch caused a dark hue on her otherwise milky white cheeks. She pulled her hand away instantly.

The pleasure is mine, Ms Khushi. I was wondering Mr Sharma can Khushi show me around. I would like a tour of this school.

Mr Sharma practically pushed Khushi in my direction showing his agreement and the poor woman had no option but to join me as I left the auditorium. Fuming with rage she followed me without uttering a single word. I grinned feeling her rising anger. We kept walking till I reached the amphitheatre behind the building. She looked breathtaking in her bright pink salwar suit. I sat on the familiar bench just like the last time when Khushi had spoken to me out of my own will. We have come afar from that phase of confusion and hatred. My musings came to halt as a furious Khushi exploded on me.

When I suggested you get back to work I never meant for you to be the sponsor of my language school. Stop hounding me. I am not interested in your games.

Listen Ms Gupta I will do whatever it takes to make you a part of my life. This is not a game for me. Baat dil ki hai. Mera suqoon ho tum. Aur koi mera suqoon cheene ye mujhe gawarah nai.
(This is about my heart. You are my peace. And I won't spare anyone who will try to ruin my peace).

She cocked her head to one side as if my words did not make any sense to her. Slowly as comprehension dawned upon her a frown appeared on her forehead and she pursed her lips as if I were a bratty child who was not ready to understand her point. I sighed watching her reaction. How can one woman look so...so cute? Folding her hands across her chest she uttered the one name which is enough to make my blood boil.

You are just jealous of my friendship with Sid. He is everything that you are not. So naturally, you are scared that...

His name enraged the monster inside me. While Khushi's eyes twinkled with the mere mention of his name.  I stood up from my comfortable position making the lady in front of me retreat. Before she could another step away from me I  held her palm in both my hands and gave it a long-lasting smooch. A gasp escaped her lips at my unexpected affection.

Siddharth Shukla ne tumse friendship kri thi tumne nahi. You only offered your friendship to me. When I fainted you took care of me. You like spending time with me and my nephew. Chaahte to hum dono hi ek hi cheez hain Khushi Gupta.
(It was Sid who wanted to be your friend, not the other way round. Both of us want the same thing, Khushi Gupta).

Scrunching her face she pulled her hand away from me. The gesture hurt like hell. But it did nothing to dampen my spirit. I had done all this wanting her to hear me out. So I focused my attention on the task. Keeping a check on my emotions I simply stated the obvious.

Khushi come to AR tomorrow there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for my new project. You are my good luck charm.

Are you kidding? You expect me to come to that evil place that you call your office? You are nuts Raizada.

This time things will be different I promise.

But she turned away and headed back towards the building. My desire to have her as the guest of honour was greater than my self-respect. So I did the one thing that she least expected out of me. Sprinting towards her I went down on my knees and called out to her. Khushi's eyes touched her hairline at the public display. There were a few teenaged students nearby and it did not take them long to notice what was happening between us.
Smirking at the idea that crossed my mind I put my plan into action.

Khushi please maan jao. Tum office aaogi to mujhe achcha lagega.
(Khushi please agree with me. I would like it if you will join me at the office event).

YE AAP KYA KR RAHEIN HAIN?!? Uthiye...Arnavji uthiye sab dekh rahe hain. HUM YAHAN KAAM KRTE HAIN...Hey, Devi Maiyya ye kya tamasha hai?
(WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO DO?!? Get up...Arnavji get up everyone is watching us. THIS IS MY WORKPLACE...Oh Devi Maiyya what is all this drama?)

Haan krdo Khushi warna main in students ke saamne main bahut kuch karsakta hoon.
(Say yes Khushi or else I can do a lot of things in front of these students).

Aap humein dhamka nahi sakte?)
(Are you trying to threaten me?)

I have a ring on my finger what if I pull it out and....?

NAHI! BILKUL NAHI!
(NO! STOP IT!)

Her eyes bulged out making me chuckle inwardly. I did not want to force her hand like this but this woman is so stubborn that I had no choice but to act like a Romeo desperate for his Juliet's attention. Good. I observed her expressions watching her consider my idea. To prompt her further I enquired once again.

So what is the verdict Khushi?

Theek hai. Hum kal aapke office aajayenge. AB UTHIYE. JALDI SE.
(Fine. I will be there tomorrow. NOW GET UP. QUICK).

Smiling at my ladylove I stood up and turned around to see a couple of teenagers whispering amongst each other. When they saw me looking at them the gossipers stood a little away from
each other. Rolling my eyes I stated a simple fact.

I am pulling her leg. We are BFFs.

By the time I turned back to face Khushi she returned to the building but not before banging the door a little too harshly making me grin at her childishness. I am sorry Khushi but tomorrow is a really big day for me. And I need you around me. Nothing could go wrong when you are next to me. Aur kal main tumse apne dil ki baat kehke rahunga.
(And tomorrow I will finally confess my love to her).

Unknown POV

Tapping desk I gazed back at my most trusted man who was finally giving me a lead about my enemy. Raizada was finally out of his den. An evil smirk took over my features imagining the different scenarios that would cause his death. By sheer luck, he escaped his end the last time. But this time no one will be able to save him. Not even god. I confirmed once more for my satisfaction.

And you are sure about this information?

Sir the entire AR Designs is gossiping about his return. Tomorrow there will be a small get together in the office.

Standing up from my seat I sauntered towards my right-hand man and patted his shoulders. This was my gesture to let him know that he did a wonderful job. He beamed at me in return. My approval is not earned so easily.

I rubbed my hands in glee feeling the excitement for tomorrow. Finally, I will get the chance to finish off Arnav Singh Raizada. The man who destroyed my father. It was because of Arnav that my Dad lost his pride and power. Our palace, Sheesh Mahal. The good for nothing psychotic Raizada had to return and claim his house after ages. He should have been rotting in hell after the way Dad threw him and his sister out of Sheesh Mahal.

But no. Like a thorn in our lives he ruthlessly took our business and property from us and then dared to blame us for claiming his possessions. The next day I had found my father's dead body in his room. Unable to take the hurt and loss he had over-dosed. From that day onwards I Shyam Manohar Malik took the oath to destroy him for good.

The accident I had staged on Diwali night was perfect. However, he survived. But tomorrow I will ensure that he is dead for good. Then nobody will stop me from claiming our ancestral property, Sheesh Mahal.

Kal uss ASR ka aakhri din hoga iss duniya mein.
(Tomorrow will be the last day of ASR in this world).

ASR POV

As my guest of honour arrived in AR roses were showered upon her from every direction. Dressed in a white anarkali she appeared to be an angel. I could not help but feel my heart stutter as she prowled in my direction.

Hey zu hmm
hmm hmm hmm
Hey hey hey
hey hey hey
Ab mujhe raat din
tumhara hi khayal hain
Ab mujhe raat din
tumhara hi khayal hain
Kya kahu pyaar mein
deewano jaisa haal hain

The rest of the staff faded in the background as she came to stand in such proximity to me. Any other person would have shied away from our private moment. Her jasmine fragrance indulged my senses leaving my mind too handicapped to think much.

Ho ho aa ha ha ha
la la la la la la
Ab mujhe raat din
tumhara hi khayal hain
Kya kahu pyaar mein deewano
jaisa haal hain

As our breaths touch each other I moved my lips to touch her baby-soft cheek. In front of my eyes, it turned into a dark shade of red. Khushi's eyes fluttered close as she whimpered my name softly. A strange emotion bubbled within me as she uttered my name.

Tum ko dekhe beena
chain milta nahi
Dil pe ab to koi
zor chalta nahi
Jaadu hain kaisa
dil ki lagi mein
Dub gaya hu is
bekhudi mein

Smiling at her I lifted her hand and kept twirling her in circles. Nothing mattered anymore. I was happy in our small little world. In the midst of the dance, I caught something twinkling on Khushi's finger. I halted our movements.

Ho ho aa ha ha ha
la la la la la la
Ab mujhe raat din
tumhara hi khayal hai
Kya kahu pyaar mein
deewano jaisa haal hain

I am so happy that we are engaged Arnavji. We are meant to be together.

Without wasting any moment she wrapped me in her embrace. Surrounded by Khushi, knowing that now nothing will break us away I folded the woman in my chest. This is how we should be. Together. Always and forever.

I love you Arnavji!

With a gasp, I woke up only to see myself sitting on the bed. The sunlight was playing peek a boo from the drapes across the room. Damn it. Ughh. I wish this was more than just a dream. With a sweeping glance, I noticed the time. Oh crap. I am supposed to be at the office by now. What if Khushi arrives early?

I will do everything within my power to make this dream come true. Khushi will have to agree to be mine. I will make sure of it.
